Washington is a fascinating place brimming with unique stories. As our nation’s capital, the city is known to everyone in the world as a monumental federal city. Less well known, however, is Washington as the culturally-rich livable hometown behind the headlines. The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. serves to collect, preserve, and share those stories.

HSW's exhibits, programs, and Kiplinger Research Library are FREE and open to the public.
Our collections include over 100,000 images, books, maps, and objects. The Historical Society also promotes research and scholarship, and publishes Washington History magazine, the only academic journal dedicated wholly to the history of Washington.

Please join HSW or make a donation to support our mission of sharing Washington's stories with the world.

As a individual member of HSW, you will receive:

  • A annual subscription to new issues of the Washington History journal;
  • Optional online subscription to the complete WH Journal archives;
  • Invitations to exhibit openings and events;
  • Participation in members-only events and meetings; and
  • Discounts at the Kiplinger Research Library.
The Historical Society has also entered into a partnership with JSTOR, the leading online digital archive for over 1,000 academic journals, to provide our members access to the entirety of Washington History magazine online!* Those who wish to subscribe to Washington History online may do so by becoming a Digital Access member!

There are other ways
to help preserve and share D.C.'s history! Please contact us about volunteering or applying for an internship. If you wish to make a donation to the collections of the Kiplinger Research Library, please contact the library at library@historydc.org or 202.383.1850.

Thank you for your support!

*New issues of the journal appear online approximately 3 months after publication due to the time it takes JSTOR to scan, index, and upload the content.
