Ground Level

The Great Hall
Located on the main level of the building, the Great Hall features stunning Beaux-Arts architecture and a 106-year-old terrazzo floor.  It has welcomed historic leaders such as President Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mary McLeod Bethune, Julian Bond, Senator Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama, among others. This grand space of over 3,200 square feet features bands of ruby and gold which lift your eyes to the lofty ceiling where names deserving of a historic library are carved.  With its spectacular marble staircase and singular craftsmanship, this room is perfect for standing receptions, seated dining or large meetings.

The Green Room
Located in on the main level behind the Great Hall, the Green Room is the perfect setting for meetings, workshops, small gatherings or a staging area for performers and VIP’s. The room offers guests a private space while remaining on the main level.

The Theatre
With 150 seats and state of the art technology, this space located on the main level of the building adjacent to the Great Hall is perfect for hosting a meeting, panel or film presentation and is ideal for convention attendees.  A podium, stationary microphones, and an LCD projection system are available for use.

The Plaza & Grounds
Located outside the main entrance to the Historical Society, a generous plaza faces K Street and is ideal for welcoming your guests with the “Red Carpet Treatment.  It is a perfect space for an outdoor cocktail reception, a red carpet area, vehicle displays, and event branding.  Architectural stone benches and pillars frame the front door, welcoming your guests or clients into the magnificent interior of the building.  The Historical Society also offers clients the ability to tent the grounds or hold outdoor events on the lawn.

Upper Level

The Reception Hall
This traditional Beaux-Arts open landing on the upper level serves as the foyer to the Historical Society’s Kiplinger Library and Exhibit Galleries. Featuring a skylight and bands or ruby red and gold around the circumference of the ceiling, the room is a perfect location for standing cocktails and an elegant seated lunch or dinner.

Lower Level

The Assembly Hall
This unique space located on the lower level of the building features a vaulted Beaux-Arts style ceiling.  Once a “bike garage” for DC’s first public library, this space has since been enclosed and serves as the handicapped entrance, exit staging, or overflow reception space for larger events.
